Long before it produced automobiles, the Peugeot company was turning out pepper grinders; the first dates from 1842. The excellent Peugeot Auberge mill is a classic of the genre. The peppercorns are loaded into the smooth, gently curved body through a narrow opening at the top. You grasp the body in the middle with one hand and turn the top with the other. As you grind, peppercorns inside the hollow core feed into the precision, case-hardened steel mill at the bottom, an unusually large mechanism justly famed for its durability. A single turn produces a generous flurry of pepper.
